GCUOBA Welcomes New Principal in Grand Style
The arrival of the long-awaited new Principal of Government College Ughelli (GCU), Mr. Samson Obor, was greeted with a warm welcome party by the National Executive Council of Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA) on Saturday, 14th November 2020. The event was hosted by Chief Miller Uloho (of the Class of 1951 and a past Vice President General of GCUOBA) at his palatial country home in Ughelli.
The reception party started with a buffet lunch where all the dignitaries numbering about 15 were exclusively treated with a variety of local and continental cuisines and assorted wines in a convivial atmosphere full of high expectations and excitement. Mr. Samson Obor thanked the Association for the efforts expended in getting him to be deployed to GCU. Obor remarked that “to whom much is given, much is expected” while promising to do his best to improve the standards of GCU students, particularly in the areas of discipline and academics. He reiterated that discipline and academics go hand in hand and that without discipline there cannot be any improvement in academics.
The Association encouraged the new principal to work fearlessly and without intimidation; and that, above all, he must not allow himself to be influenced unduly while trying to accomplish the task for which he has been brought to GCU. Sam Obor promised to leave a good legacy at the end of his sojourn at GCU.
The invited special guests list to the august occasion included the Chairman of GCU Parents Teachers Association (Comrade Pat Ogheghe), President General of Ughelli Descendants Union (Chief Pius Omubaye), and the Vice Principal of GCU (Mr. Jacob Iroroturi).
After the sumptuous luncheon, NEC members went into a closed door meeting with the new principal, chaired by the President General Worldwide (PGWW), Arc Charles Majoroh, who flew in from his Lagos base for the reception. Amongst the issues discussed was how to improve discipline by the introduction of sanctions and detention book, daily house work and weekly school work, the need to liaise with government to protect the principal on disciplinary matters, regular joint School/Old-Boys meetings, and understanding the contents of the booklet, “Culture and Traditions of GCU”.
GCUOBA members that graced the occasion were Arc. Charles Majoroh, Chief Miller Uloho, Dr. Richard Obiuwevbi (AIIC Chairman), Emmanuel Etaghene (immediate past Warri Branch President), Prince Diamond Ejomarie (Home Branch President), Pastor Wilson Egbodje (HDA), Robert Oviri (National Treasurer) and Arch. Alfred Avwaruroro (immediate past HDA).
