Promoting Excellence, Speed and Logical Reasoning in Mathematics

 

The 2026 edition of the Government College Ughelli (GCU) Inter-House Mathematics Quiz Competition was conceived to stimulate greater interest in Mathematics among students while fostering healthy academic rivalry among the various houses. The competition provided a platform for participants to demonstrate analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, speed, accuracy, and teamwork.

The competition was designed not merely as a contest, but as an initiative aimed at strengthening the culture of mathematical excellence within the College.

Competition Format

The competition followed a structured quiz format guided by the following rules:

Each house answered 10 questions.
Every question contained four multiple-choice options (A–D), with only one correct answer.
Correct answer (direct): 5 marks
Passed question (correct): 2 marks
Wrong answer: 0 marks

Rules and Procedure

Questions were selected randomly by participants through envelopes drawn from a concealed bag. Each envelope contained:

A copy of the question for the participant
The corresponding question number

The Quiz Master read each question and its options aloud, after which participants were given 30 seconds to respond.

Where a participant:

Answered incorrectly, or
Failed to respond before the bell signalled the end of the allotted time,

the question was passed to the next house.

For passed questions:

The question was re-read
The receiving house had 20 seconds to respond
Correct answers attracted 2 marks

All answers were expected to be clear and final, while external assistance was strictly prohibited.

Competition Progress and Results
Round 1A Results

The opening round witnessed impressive performances:

School House: 47 points
Forcados House: 46 points
Warri House: 30 points

With these outcomes, School House and Forcados House progressed to the next stage.

Round 1B Results

Ashaka House secured a convincing victory over Sapele House with a score of 46–22, earning qualification for the semi-finals.

Round 1C Results

Orerokpe House advanced past Oleh House with a score of 46–29, thereby securing a place in the semi-finals.

Semi-Final Results

The semi-finals, held on Monday, 25th May 2026, produced highly competitive encounters.

In Round 2A, School House recorded an emphatic 50–29 victory over Ashaka House.
In Round 2B, Forcados House defeated Orerokpe House by 46–25 to progress to the final.

The results set up an eagerly anticipated grand finale between School House and Forcados House.

Grand Finale

The grand finale delivered another impressive display of mathematical ability, composure, and speed under pressure.

At the end of the contest, School House emerged champions of the 2026 Government College Ughelli Inter-House Mathematics Quiz Competition, defeating Forcados House with a score of 51–35.

The victory crowned School House as overall champions following an outstanding performance throughout the competition.

Reflections and Future Outlook

Following the successful completion of the competition, it is our earnest desire that Mathematics will occupy a special place in the hearts of GCU students and become a language they speak with confidence and fluency. It is hoped that this initiative will serve as both a propeller and a springboard for more regular mathematics competitions and related academic activities within the College.

The Inter-House Mathematics Quiz Competition has demonstrated that when students are challenged within an engaging and intellectually stimulating environment, excellence naturally follows.
